Recommendation systems now mediate a substantial share of encounters with written work, but their effect on reading practice is under-described. Over eight weeks, twenty participants kept structured diaries of what they read, how they arrived at it and what they abandoned. Recommended texts were more likely to be started and markedly more likely to be abandoned before completion. Participants described a sense of abundance coupled with diminished commitment, a pattern we relate to existing work on choice architecture.
